Marangu route

Marangu (Coca Cola) Route

Marangu Route is often called the Tourist Route or the Coca Cola Route, and is both the least difficult and the shortest way to reach Uhuru Peak. It is also the oldest of the routes. 70% of all climbers choose to take this route, as it mostly consists of easy hiking.

The Route, often referred to as the “Coca-Cola Route,” is considered the easiest path to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in terms of terrain and gradual ascent. However, this ease can be misleadingβ€”Marangu has a surprisingly high failure rate due to trekkers underestimating the physical demands and neglecting proper preparation. If you take this route seriously, train adequately, and allow your body time to acclimatize, it can be a comfortable and successful climb.

One of the main advantages of the Route is its unique accommodation. Unlike other routes that require camping, Marangu features permanent mountain huts at each overnight stop. This makes it a particularly attractive option during the rainy season, as trekkers can avoid wet tents and enjoy more sheltered conditions. The huts also provide a communal, social atmosphere for climbers along the route.

While it may not be as visually striking or diverse as routes like Machame or Lemosho, Marangu still offers beautiful views, especially in the moorlands and alpine desert zones. It is the only route that uses the same trail for both ascent and descent, which can reduce the variety of scenery but simplifies logistics.

Trekkers can choose between a five-day or six-day itinerary, though the six-day option is strongly recommended to improve acclimatization and summit success rates.

Marangu is ideal for those who prefer a less rugged trek with more structure and shelter, especially during wetter months.
